Unfinished Green

Marble, nature · ab 1992

A figure emerges from the stone, barely suggested, like a face hidden in the folds of time. Unfinished Green is not simply an unfinished work: it is a body abandoned to the slow embrace of nature. The marble, set among leaves and branches, lets itself be carved by the years, by rain, by lichen. Kurt Laurenz Metzler does not finish it: he lets the living green do that. As he said himself: sometimes you have to leave things alone, they reduce themselves to the absurd. Here human artifice gives way to something greater: the stone returns to the forest. The unfinished is here also reabsorbed: the sculpture does not display itself, it hides.
