Travelling Family, Modell für Changi Airport

This work is the preparatory model for Metzler's last major public installation before his death, later translated into aluminium and placed in Terminal 4 of Changi Airport in Singapore.

Traveling Family was born from a personal memory of the artist: a trip to New York with his family. On that occasion, Metzler observed with clarity and irony the scene of a large family on the move, a microcosm of chaos, neurosis, complicity and vitality, like a spontaneous choreography within the highly structured space of an airport.

The composition is dynamic, almost theatrical. Intertwined bodies, dragged suitcases, postures leaning forward speak of haste, urgency and disorientation. But beneath the chaotic surface, a deep feeling of unity and tenderness is also perceptible, the bond that holds the figures together in the storm of modern travel.

In line with Metzler's poetics, the observation of everyday reality is transformed into sculptural narrative, capable of conveying the contemporary human condition: precarious, fragmented, but always full of meaning.

Quest'opera rappresenta il modello preparatorio per l'ultima grande installazione pubblica realizzata da Metzler prima della sua morte, successivamente tradotta in alluminio e collocata nel Terminal 4 dell'aeroporto di Changi, a Singapore.

Traveling Family nasce da un ricordo personale dell'artista: un viaggio a New York con la sua famiglia. In quell'occasione, Metzler osservò con lucidità e ironia la scena di una famiglia numerosa in movimento, un microcosmo di caos, nevrosi, complicità e vitalità, come fosse una coreografia spontanea all'interno dello spazio altamente strutturato di un aeroporto.

La composizione è dinamica, quasi teatrale. Corpi che si intrecciano, valigie trascinate, posture sbilanciate in avanti raccontano fretta, urgenza e spaesamento. Ma sotto la superficie caotica, si percepisce anche un sentimento profondo di unità e tenerezza, il legame che tiene insieme i personaggi nella tempesta del viaggio moderno.

In linea con la poetica di Metzler, anche qui l'osservazione della realtà quotidiana si trasforma in narrazione scultorea, capace di restituire la condizione umana contemporanea, precaria, frammentata, ma pur sempre carica di significato.

Traveling Family entsteht aus einer persönlichen Erinnerung des Künstlers: einer Reise nach New York mit seiner Familie. Bei dieser Gelegenheit beobachtete Metzler mit Klarheit und Ironie die Szene einer grossen Familie in Bewegung. Ein Mikrokosmos aus Chaos, Nervosität, Verbundenheit und Vitalität, wie eine spontane Choreografie im hochstrukturierten Raum eines Flughafens.

Die Komposition ist dynamisch, fast theatralisch. Körper, die sich überschneiden, gezogene Koffer, nach vorne geneigte Haltungen erzählen von Eile, Dringlichkeit und Verlorenheit. Doch unter der chaotischen Oberfläche ist auch ein tiefes Gefühl von Einheit und Zärtlichkeit spürbar, das Band, das die Personen im Sturm der modernen Reise zusammenhält.

Im Geist von Metzlers Poetik wird die Beobachtung des alltäglichen Lebens hier zur skulpturalen Erzählung, die das prekäre, fragmentierte und doch bedeutungsvolle Wesen der zeitgenössischen menschlichen Existenz wiedergibt.
