The Weight (Nativity)

Fiberglass · 2008

Conceived for the Christmas exhibition Nevrotici Metropolitani: Natività in Assisi in 2009, The Weight (Nativity) represents one of the most poetic and conceptually dense moments in Metzler's production. In front of the Basilica of San Francesco, the artist made thirty fiberglass sheep, part of a contemporary pilgrimage toward a symbolic Christ child, flanked by thirty figures from the Nevrotici Metropolitani series. On their fleece Metzler engraved a complex symbolic language: numbers, alphabets, currencies, signs, all representing the structures and conventions of modern society. In the Park, Metzler made a radical choice: he left these works exposed to the elements without restoration, the only unrestored sculptures in the collection.
