Roma

Bronze · 1995

With Roma, Metzler takes us into a kind of theatrical re-enactment. It is not simply a series of sculptures: it is a true scenic installation, a reflection on the eternal myth of the Eternal City. These bronze figures, the Gladiator, the Philosopher, the City-Man, are placed on tall columns of aluminium and iron, a direct reference to antiquity but with a contemporary touch: the columns are not massive and monumental, but light, almost aerial, defying the weight of history and traditional materials. The work is a re-enactment of one of the most important exhibitions in Metzler's career: the show at the Terme di Caracalla-Eurogarden in Rome, where modern art dialogued with the ruins of antiquity. Bronze gives body to figures that seem suspended between epochs: not historical reconstructions, but archetypes.
