Polo

This maquette is the preparatory model for the largest monumental work ever realised by Metzler: a powerful sculpture twenty metres high in corten steel, commissioned for the Garangula polo centre in Australia. Despite the reduced dimensions of the model, the energy and complexity of the composition are already fully present. The artist manages to condense into a single abstract form multiple meanings and references: the heads recall the man and the rider; the extended, articulated arms become the player's mallets; in the centre, a solid construction recalls an architecture, perhaps symbol of foundation and civilisation; finally, the stylised leg evokes the strength and dynamism of the horse. This work demonstrates Metzler's extraordinary ability to combine human figure, animal, sporting gesture and architectural structure.

Questo bozzetto è il modello preparatorio per l'opera monumentale più grande mai realizzata da Metzler: un'imponente scultura alta venti metri in ferro corten, commissionata per il centro di polo Garangula, in Australia. Nonostante le dimensioni ridotte del modello, l'energia e la complessità della composizione sono già pienamente presenti. L'artista riesce a condensare in un'unica forma astratta molteplici significati e riferimenti: le teste richiamano l'uomo e il cavaliere; le braccia estese e articolate diventano le mazze del giocatore; al centro, una costruzione solida ricorda un'architettura, forse simbolo di fondamento e civiltà; infine, la zampa stilizzata evoca la forza e il dinamismo del cavallo. Trotz der reduzierten Grösse des Modells sind Energie und Komplexität der Komposition bereits voll präsent.
