Pacemaker

Iron with engine parts · 1978

Pacemaker, from the Motormenschen series, is a sculpture that looks straight in the eye of the emerging bio-technology era of the 1970s, when medicine began to merge with mechanics. Kurt Laurenz Metzler interprets this crucial passage with the strength of iron and the precision of real engine gears, embedded in the matter as if they were organs. The work seems an interrupted creature: neither machine nor man, a hybrid. Its robust, articulated forms evoke the human body only by substitution. There is no flesh, but function. No heart, but pacemaker. Metzler here neither criticises nor praises: he stages a doubt. Where does the human end when the body becomes a spare part? In 1979 the work was exhibited at the Kunsthaus in Zurich with the engine still running.
