Nevrotici Urbani

Fiberglass · 1989

With the Nevrotici Urbani series, Metzler opens a new phase of his fiberglass sculpture and marks a clear conceptual break from the Strassenmenschen of 1968. Where group anonymity dominated there, urban individualism takes over here: no longer a revolutionary mass, but single metropolitan identities immersed in a chaotic, neurotic daily life. The figures reflect the aesthetic and social climate of the 1980s: fashion, urban hyperactivity, growing alienation. This is also the series in which the figure of the newspaper reader appears for the first time, a symbol of the contemporary individual, closed in his own world, isolated within the crowd. Metzler abandons the monochrome of the 1960s and introduces varied colour combinations, suggesting psychological complexity.
