Nevrotici Metropolitani

Fiberglass · 2001

With the Nevrotici Metropolitani series, Metzler's third sculpture cycle in fiberglass, the artist returns to a deep reflection on the urban condition, this time in response to a precise and traumatic historical event: the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001. Deeply connected to New York, the city where he had lived and which had shaped his artistic formation, Metzler felt the urgency to respond through art.

The figures of this series are more solid, almost armoured, with a compact, structured, more detailed physical presence than the Strassenmenschen of the 1960s. Yet the monochrome colour returns, as in his early years. A choice that here carries symbolic meaning, evoking the idea of a unity necessary to survive collective trauma, the rupture of 11 September.

The series culminated in 2007 with the memorable exhibition of forty figures in front of Milan's central station, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. An installation that Metzler considered the most important and beloved of his career.
