Uomo Aria (Luftmenschen)

Fiberglass · 1990
Uomo Aria (Luftmenschen), 1990

From the Luftmenschen series, the Aerial Beings. This work marks a deep conceptual turning point in Metzler's practice. After a life devoted to representing strong, well-defined characters, with Uomo Aria the artist confronts for the first time absence, the indefinite, the opposite of plastic presence.

The title refers to a German idiom. Du bist Luft, you are air, meaning insubstantial, invisible, irrelevant. This very idea is translated into sculpture. The human being is no longer mass, but void, cut-out, absence. The work consists of a fiberglass plate painted bright yellow, from which the figure of a tall, stylised man has been cut out. He is defined not by the matter, but by the space that runs through him.

With this airy figure, which reveals the landscape behind it, Metzler questions the contemporary human condition. Who are we, when only the outlines remain?

It is one of the artist's most conceptual and philosophical series, in which the negative form becomes the protagonist, and the human being is for the first time defined by what is missing rather than by what he is.
