Litigio

French limestone · 1994

Two bodies. A couple. Standing, back to back, in silent contrast. In this work Metzler captures a universal moment: relational conflict. No words are needed: the postures speak for themselves. The two figures, carved in French limestone, seem prisoners of a distance that is emotional before it is physical. The stone is coloured, a choice that explicitly recalls ancient Greek sculpture, that original polychromy time had erased and history has slowly rediscovered. An art that becomes alive again, human, imperfect. Litigio is a plastic representation of non-dialogue, but also of forced closeness. As often in Metzler, the tension between two poles, here love and incommunicability, becomes form.
