These sculptures grew from a careful, almost anthropological observation. During a visit to Venice in the 1980s for the Biennale, Metzler noticed a curious but significant detail. Everywhere, people were reading newspapers. In cafés, on benches, standing as they waited for the vaporetto. An entire city reading.

From this reflection came the Newspaper Readers series. The figures, made in fiberglass, have essential faces, relaxed postures and clothing in strong colours. What catches the eye is the use of the newspaper. It is not a simple prop, but a conceptual and narrative element.

The newspaper is printed on screen-printed aluminium sheets, and reveals something of the character itself. The news being read becomes an extension of their thoughts. Metzler invites us to reflect on how what we read, and how we read it, speaks about us, about our priorities, our anxieties or curiosities.

In many public versions of the work, the newspaper could be personalised, sometimes with the front page dedicated to the patron. An elegant and ironic way of turning the work into a portrait.

Queste sculture nascono da un'osservazione meticolosa e quasi antropologica. Durante una visita a Venezia negli anni Ottanta, in occasione della Biennale, Metzler si accorge di un dettaglio curioso ma significativo. Ovunque ci sono persone immerse nella lettura dei giornali. Nei bar, sulle panchine, in piedi in attesa del vaporetto. Un'intera città che legge.

Da questa riflessione prende forma la serie dei Lettori di Giornale. Le figure, realizzate in vetroresina, si presentano con volti essenziali, posture rilassate e abiti dai colori forti. Ma ciò che colpisce è l'uso del giornale, non come semplice oggetto di scena, ma come elemento concettuale e narrativo.

Il giornale, infatti, è stampato su fogli di alluminio serigrafati, e rivela qualcosa del personaggio stesso. Le notizie lette diventano estensione del suo pensiero. Metzler ci invita così a riflettere su quanto ciò che leggiamo, e come lo leggiamo, parli di noi, delle nostre priorità, delle nostre ansie o curiosità.

In molte versioni pubbliche di quest'opera, il giornale poteva essere personalizzato, talvolta con la prima pagina dedicata al committente. Un modo elegante e ironico di trasformare l'opera in un ritratto.

Diese Skulpturen entstehen aus einer akribischen, fast anthropologischen Beobachtung. In Bars, auf Bänken, im Stehen am Vaporetto. Eine ganze Stadt liest.

Aus dieser Beobachtung entsteht die Serie der Zeitungsleser. Die Figuren in Glasfaser zeigen sich mit reduzierten Gesichtern, entspannten Haltungen und Kleidung in kräftigen Farben. Was beeindruckt, ist die Verwendung der Zeitung. Sie ist nicht einfach Requisite, sondern konzeptuelles und narratives Element.

Die Zeitung ist auf Aluminiumfolie gedruckt, im Siebdruckverfahren. Sie verrät etwas über die Figur selbst. Was sie liest, wird zur Erweiterung ihrer Gedanken. So lädt Metzler zur Reflexion ein, wie sehr das, was wir lesen und wie wir es lesen, von uns spricht, von unseren Prioritäten, Ängsten und Neugierden.

In vielen öffentlichen Auftragsversionen konnte die Zeitung individualisiert werden. Manchmal mit einer Titelseite, die dem Auftraggeber gewidmet war. Eine elegante und ironische Art, das Werk in ein Porträt zu verwandeln.
