Il Guardiano

Corten steel · 1994

This work is one of the most emblematic expressions of Kurt Laurenz Metzler's sculptural poetics in the 1990s, a period in which form becomes drier but no less intense, and corten steel, with its natural oxidation and warm tonality, becomes an ideal expressive medium for tension, resistance and strength. The figure of the Guardian rises on a solid, monumental base, with a formal layout that recalls both archaic statuary and the constructivist avant-gardes of the twentieth century. Metzler reworks the lesson of modernism, particularly of Julio González and David Smith, transposing abstract language into a contemporary psychological and symbolic narrative. The gesture of the arms, raised and articulated defensively, suggests an attitude of alert. A figure that protects itself and at the same time defines a space.
