Icaro

Bronze and iron base · 1991

This is the artist's last work linked to the theme of winged figures, a recurring strand of his research. In this sculpture, however, the myth of Icarus takes on a new and unexpected meaning. Here we do not find the tragic hero with wax wings, but an abstract, strongly stylised figure, in which the reference to architecture is evident. The traditional Icarus, rebellious, daring, victim of his own ambition, is reinterpreted in contemporary key: no longer mythological figure but urban man, immersed in the verticality and geometry of the city. The wings become structural, almost architectural forms, integrated into a body that appears at once human and built. The iron base reinforces this sense of solidity, as if the lightness of flight were now surpassed by a new reality.
