Collaborazione (Spares)

This sculpture is among the most intimate and moving in all of Metzler's production. Made in the midst of his illness, it took shape between 2019 and 2022, in a period marked by vulnerability but also by lucid creativity.

The subject is a figure with three heads. A strange, almost surreal vision, which carries a powerful metaphor. The resilience of identity, even when undermined by the body. Metzler, who suffered six strokes between 2017 and 2019, rethinks his own condition in this multi-headed figure. As he liked to say, with irony and clarity: If one stops working, I have two in reserve.

It is a work that speaks of survival and adaptation, but also of inner cooperation. The three heads do not fight each other, do not overlap. They cooperate, help each other, support each other. In a world that often rewards performance and absolute uniqueness, Metzler reverses the paradigm. Strength lies in plurality, in solidarity between parts of oneself.

Formally too, the bronze conveys a sense of solidity and resistance, as if to fix in time the dignity of fragility. Collaborazione (Spares) is therefore much more than a sculpted autobiography. It is a hymn to the possibility of reinventing oneself, even in illness. A human and artistic lesson. When one voice falls silent, there are others ready to continue the dialogue.

Questa scultura è tra le più intime e struggenti di tutta la produzione di Metzler. Realizzata nel pieno della sua malattia, prende vita tra il 2019 e il 2022, in un periodo segnato da vulnerabilità, ma anche da lucidità creativa.

Il soggetto rappresenta un personaggio con tre teste. Una visione straniante, quasi surreale, ma che porta con sé una potente metafora. La resilienza dell'identità, anche quando minata dal corpo. Metzler, colpito da sei ictus tra il 2017 e il 2019, rielabora la propria condizione in questa figura pluricefala. Come amava dire con ironia e lucidità: Se non funziona più una, ne ho due di scorta.

È un'opera che parla di sopravvivenza e adattamento, ma anche di cooperazione interiore. Le tre teste non lottano tra loro, non si sovrappongono. Collaborano, si aiutano, si sorreggono. In un mondo che spesso premia la performance e l'unicità assoluta, Metzler capovolge il paradigma. La forza sta nella pluralità, nella solidarietà tra le parti di sé stessi.

Diese Skulptur gehört zu den intimsten und ergreifendsten Werken Metzlers. Geschaffen mitten in seiner Erkrankung, entsteht sie zwischen 2019 und 2022, in einer Zeit der Verletzlichkeit, aber auch luzider Kreativität.

Das Sujet zeigt eine Figur mit drei Köpfen. Eine befremdende, fast surreale Vision, die jedoch eine starke Metapher trägt. Die Resilienz der Identität, auch wenn der Körper geschwächt ist. Metzler, der zwischen 2017 und 2019 sechs Schlaganfälle erlitt, verarbeitet seine eigene Situation in dieser mehrköpfigen Figur. Wie er mit Ironie und Klarheit zu sagen pflegte: Wenn einer nicht mehr funktioniert, habe ich zwei in Reserve.

Es ist ein Werk, das von Überleben und Anpassung spricht, aber auch von innerer Kooperation. Die drei Köpfe kämpfen nicht miteinander, überlagern sich nicht. Sie kooperieren, helfen einander, stützen sich gegenseitig. In einer Welt, die oft Performance und absolute Einzigartigkeit belohnt, kehrt Metzler das Paradigma um. Die Stärke liegt in der Vielheit, in der Solidarität zwischen den Teilen seiner selbst.

Auch formal vermittelt die Bronze ein Gefühl von Festigkeit und Widerstand, als wolle sie die Würde der Zerbrechlichkeit in der Zeit festhalten. Collaborazione (Spares) ist also weit mehr als eine geformte Autobiografie. Es ist eine Hymne an die Möglichkeit, sich neu zu erfinden, auch in der Krankheit. Eine menschliche und künstlerische Lehre. Wenn eine Stimme verstummt, sind andere bereit, den Dialog fortzuführen.
