Città Motore

Iron · 1980

This work marks a turning point in Kurt Laurenz Metzler's artistic path. In the 1970s he had centred much of his production on the figure of the man-motor: a synthesis between individual and machine. With Città Motore, executed in iron in 1980, the artist makes a symbolic transition to a new cycle dedicated to the urban environment, to the metropolis as an autonomous organism. The work takes the form of a miniature city supported by powerful, geometric legs: a hybrid figure that seems to march toward the future. The skyscrapers, assembled from engine parts and recycled metal materials, evoke a dynamic skyline in becoming. The title widens the discourse from the single human body to the collective, from the individual-machine to the city as social and productive machine.
