Bodenmensch

Travertine · 1993

Bodenmensch literally means Man of the Earth. This work, carved in travertine with force and apparent brutality, is a powerful reflection on the relationship between the human body and the soil, between organic and geological matter. The apparently abstract form suggests a fragmented body, rooted in the earth. It is not a body that rises but one that emerges or sinks, depending on how you look. Perhaps a metaphor for modern identity, broken among worlds, countries, lives. Or the artist's own body, becoming matter and from there continuing to generate form and thought. Metzler challenges us with a body that does not walk, does not look, but resists. A body that belongs to the earth, perhaps more than we like to admit.
